“I Don’t Know What A Hokie Is, But God Is One Of Them”

College football is back, and the Ohio State Buckeyes look to begin their journey to repeating as champions.

However, the 2015 season may begin the same way the 2014 season did, with a loss to Virginia Tech. The defeat this season may be in part to the Virginia Tech Hokies may have a higher power on their sidelines at Lane Stadium…Or at least that is what Lee Corso will have you believe.

Flashback to August 27th, 2000.  ESPN’s College Game Day was at Virginia Tech for the Hokies game against Georgia Tech.  Corso picked the Georgia Tech for the upset.  Moments after College Game Day broadcast ended, a strike of lightning hit a car in a parking lot near the stadium.  Turns out, that the lightning had struck a rental car.  The temporary of owner of that car was none other than Corso.

Call it coincidence or call it fate, it has influenced Corso’s pick regarding Virginia Tech football games on College Game Day ever since.  “I don’t know what a Hokie is, but God is one of them. Go Virginia Tech,” Corso later said.  Corso even had a shirt with the quote on it made, and emphatically showed it off to the crowd when College Game Day returned to Blacksburg several years later.

Despite winning the national championship last year, and motivation to seek retribution for receiving their only loss Hokies for handing the Buckeyes their only loss, it appears that God will be wearing Orange and Maroon on Monday night.

Virginia Tech to pay tribute to WDBJ victims in Opener

On Sunday Virginia Tech Football announced via their twitter account that they will honor WDBJ’s employees Alison Parker and Adam Ward, with a decal on the Tech’s helmets.

Parker and Ward were shot and killed by a former co-cowoker during a live broadcast on Wednesday morning.

The decal feature the initials of both Parker and Ward, the number 7 for WDBJ.  The decal will also include maroon and turquoise ribbons representing Ward and Parker.  Ward was a graduate of Virginia Tech (Class of 2011), and Parker’s favorite color was turquoise.

“It’s extremely important that the families and loved ones of Allison Parker, Adam Ward, and WDBJ-TV, know that we stand united with them through this painful time,” Virginia Tech head football coach Frank Beamer said via WDBJ.  “My heart is absolutely broken for the Parker and Ward families and my prayer is that they gain strength and peace through the support and love of this community.”

The decal will on display in Virginia Tech’s season opener against defending national champions, Ohio State, on September 7th on ESPN.  Virginia Tech was the only team to defeat the Buckeye’s during the 2014 season.

Both Liberty University and Parker’s alma mater James Madison University have placed decals on their respective team’s football helmets.  JMU will honor Parker and Ward prior to Saturday’s 6 p.m. kickoff vs. Morehead St., wit a moment of silence and a video tribute.
